How to Polish Your Shoes

For many of us, the arrival of fall means one thing: it’s time to bust out the boots that have been collecting dust since last spring! Before bringing our beloved leather boots back into the mix of our daily wardrobes, it’s likely they need a little TLC. A regular buff, shine, and polish is important not only for the look, but also the longevity of your boots.

While some prefer their boots have a worn and weathered look, here at Fresh's Shoe we like to keep ours looking shiny and clean. The steps are easy and results will last all season. Here are the steps we took when learning how to buff, shine, and polish leather boots.

 

Step One

  • Brush any dirt, mud, or dust off your leather boots. Use a damp cloth or your shoe brush to achieve the proper results. Your leather boots should be free of all excess debris before you begin polishing. If using a damp cloth, remember to let your boots dry before continuing to the next step.

 

Step Two

  • Apply shoe polish to the shoe with a soft cloth or rag. Remember, a little goes a long way! Rub the polish onto the shoe in small circular motions, being careful not to get any on your carpet or floor. It’s very tough to remove shoe polish stains, so we suggest using newspaper or plastic as a protective barrier.  

 

Step Three

  • Use your shoe brush to remove any excess shoe polish from your shoes. This can be done with quick, short brush strokes in a repetitive motion. This allows the polish to sink deeper into the leather while helping you achieve an even, consistent look.

 

Step Four

  • Buff the leather using a soft cloth and brisk, back-and-forth movements. This is the fastest and easiest way to add shine to your shoes for a final glossy appearance.

 

Shoe Shine Supplies

Here are a few supplies you’ll need to properly shine your favorite leather boots.

Soft cloth or rag

Feel free to use whatever you have around the house. While you can find a special microfiber cloth online, an old t-shirt or pair of socks will work too.

Can of shoe polish

Shoe Polish is cheap and easy to find at shoe stores or online. A little polish goes a long way, so one tin should last you several years.

Good shoe brush

You can find a horsehair shoe brush online or at your local shoe store. They’re inexpensive and make a huge difference in the final appearance of your newly shined shoes.


That’s all it takes to make your old leather shoes look shiny and new!
